R-410A to A2L: What the Refrigerant Change Means in Sanford
R-410A residential split systems stopped being manufactured on 1 January 2025 under EPA's refrigerant rules. The refrigerant itself is not banned and existing systems can still be serviced — but supply is finite, and a failed R-410A condenser generally cannot be matched to a new A2L air handler.
What changed, and when
TIMELINEUnder the AIM Act of 2020, EPA’s Technology Transitions rule caps new residential AC and heat pump refrigerant at a global warming potential under 700. R-410A, at roughly 2,088, does not qualify, and manufacture and import of R-410A residential split systems was prohibited from 1 January 2025. New equipment now runs A2L refrigerants, principally R-454B and R-32. On 21 May 2026 EPA finalized a change removing the 1 January 2026 installation deadline — pre-2025 R-410A stock may continue to be installed until depleted, effective 27 July 2026.

What it costs to service the refrigerant your system already has
PRICE| Job | Researched range | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| R-410A, installed per lb | $50–$80 | national/out-of-state guide; typical full recharge $450–$900 |
| R-454B (A2L), installed per lb | $60–$90 | roughly 15–20% above R-410A per pound; no Florida source publishes this yet |
| R-22 (legacy), installed per lb | $100–$150 | reclaimed supply only, roughly double R-410A |
Every figure below is a researched third-party range published for Florida generally, attributed to the guide it came from and linked. None of them is our quote, none is Sanford-specific, and no source publishes Sanford prices at all. Use them to sanity-check a quote, not to budget to the dollar.
No Central Florida contractor publishes a per-pound refrigerant price; these are national figures shown as a proxy. Separately, the A2L transition has added roughly 10–20% to new-system install cost since 2025.
What this means for repair-or-replace
DECISIONR-410A is not interchangeable with A2L equipment, so a major component failure — a compressor especially — on an older R-410A system is a harder call than it was three years ago: matching parts costs more and the supply is shrinking.
